The Game and Me
My Involvement
Dockside Popcorn was one and only board game we've made.
I've been responsible for creating, playtesting and tweaking the ruleset with 2 other designers in the team as well as drawing cards in Photoshop.
Rules
The game is all about building your combo on the board and then reaping the juicy combos you've managed to create.
Players try to connect edges of flavour cards on the board to gain combo points at the end of a round and use special cards to obstruct others from using such opportunities.
Each flavour card has up to 4 edges with flavours - either sweet or savoury, Sweet edges grant points only if connected with other sweet edges, the same goes with savoury.
Each flavour grants from 1 to 3 points per connection, any connection of the same 2 flavours grants 1 additional point per connection.
There are 2 special cards:
- Kernel
Removes 2 points for each card it connects to.
- Fishhook
Can be used to steal any cards with an open connection from an opponent's board or to remove Kernel from your own board.
Example
To illustrate better gameplay flow, let's use an example.
Take a look at the board situation:
If we were to count the current board's
combo score, it would look like this:
- (3 + 3 + 1)
7 for a pair of
caramels - (2 + 2 + 1)
5 for a pair of
bacon - (2 + 2 + 1)
5 for a pair of
cheese -
Kernel connects with two edges and gives
-4 (-2 for each)
The total score would be
13 (7 + 5 + 5 - 4).
